Continuous Flow

Continuous flow processing creates shorter lead times by having no or minimum work-in-process inventory.

Defects are identified early and standardized work is used to maintain flow with less experienced operators.  Implementing continuous flow often requires cellular layouts.  Equipment should be laid out so that each process can be located next to the preceeding process.  Cycle times need to be balanced for each operation.  The focus of the operation should be to shorten lead times and minimize work-in-process inventory.
